2017 was another AMAZING year for The Burks Photography! It was our milestone 10th year photographing wedding together, which was very exciting! Did you miss the story of how we got started? Check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BcILux4FH23/ We shot 33 awesome weddings together this year, all over the state and country again! Plus tons of awesome engagement, bridal, and couples sessions. We photographed in 29 different cities in NC, 5 different states, and 6 different cities in SC. We traveled over 27,000 miles in our car, over 1,200 miles by train and over 22,000 Miles by plane (over 50,000 miles Total!!) We ended the year with over 75,000 miles on our just 2 year old Civic, wow! We have been so busy through 2017 and started 2018 even busier, it even took us a little bit extra time just to get this post together.
We are over halfway on states we have photographed in (those in BLUE!), and we are just ONE state away, Hawaii, from states we have visited together (those in RED!), here is our map so far:
Atlanta, GA; Meadows of Dan, VA; Blacksburg, VA; Annapolis, MD; Folly Beach, SC; Fort Mill, SC; Fayetteville, WV; Charleston, SC; Hinton, WV; Clemson, SC; Savannah, GA; Inman, SC; Awendaw, SC
Plus here is our map of counties we have photographed in NC this year, the counties in dark blue we photographed in this year. The lighter blue is counties we have photographed in past years:
Belmont, Charlotte, Asheville, Lincolnton, Denver, Waynesville, Concord, Gastonia, Marvin, Kannapolis, Kings Mountain, Harrisburg, Black Mountain, Mooresville, Polkville, Waxhaw, Conover, Wake Forest, Raleigh, Wallace, Wingate, Monroe, Iron Station, Mt. Pleasant, Fuquay Varina, Blowing Rock, Indian Trail, Mt. Holly, Smithfield
We also visited some new states together this year: Michigan, Maine, Utah, Oregon, Rhode Island; which leaves us with only ONE state left to visit together to complete all 50 states: Hawaii which we are headed to in a couple weeks. We also visited some awesome states again for personal travels: Ohio, California, Kansas, Missouri, New Hampshire, and Kentucky
After our last wedding of 2017, we took a road trip up to see Michigan and stopped at a beautiful little beach out there, to check one more state off the list:
Then we headed to spend a night in Cleveland, Ohio which was gorgeous. It was still decorated for Christmas, and we stopped in to see the Christmas Story house while we were out there. We also visited the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame which was awesome!
A few weeks later we headed up to see Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to check another state off the list:
The rest of that trip we spent exploring another new state, Maine. It was a gorgeous state, even though it was FREEZING cold! We had a blast touring lighthouses, breweries, the state capital, Stephen King’s House (which is Heather’s favorite author), the LL Bean Factory, and the beautiful coast:
We had a few different trips to Georgia. In Atlanta we had dinner with some awesome client’s at a favorite place, The Vortex. We also enjoyed exploring Savannah for a little bit after our Friday the 13th wedding.
In February we headed to California again, one of our favorite states, to see a different part: San Diego. It was gorgeous! Though very amusing when we got there because we had to beat a storm, and all of San Diego was panicking because there was a large rain storm coming. We enjoyed exploring the city and the beautiful surrounding beaches, visiting with some friends, heading out to Joshua Tree National Park, and spending time at the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and Lego Land! And of course, eating In-N-Out!
We also visited Disneyland for our 2nd time, and it was crazy busy, but a blast as usual. We even ran into some past clients while we were there, small world right?
We road tripped to Kansas City to see some awesome friends, and to go to Walter’s first MLB game! It was a great time, even if it rained the WHOLE trip except for the game!
On the way back we stopped in St. Louis to see the arch and the city again, because it’s beautiful!
We also stopped in Louisville, KY to see the Louisville Slugger Factory, and stopped at the original KFC museum as well.
We visited Virginia twice, one for a session in Blacksburg, where we visited Virginia Tech, which had a beautiful campus. Then we headed to the Meadows of Dan, VA for an Earth Day wedding in the forest. We took the longer way home on the parkway and stopped at this gorgeous little historic cabin.
We had a beautiful wedding in Maryland, while we were there we took some extra time to visit with our neighbors who moved back to MD (we miss you guys!) and explore the beautiful town of Annapolis.
On the way back we had to stop in DC, because Heather realized the Smithsonian had some Van Gogh paintings (her favorite), so she had to stop and see her first Van Gogh in real life.
In June we had an awesome trip to another new state, Utah! We spent a few days in Zion, hiking over 10 miles all day in 120 degrees, finally cooling off some in the Narrows. It was so beautiful and one of the most incredible parks we have visited. We then headed Bryce Canyon National Park, on the way we noticed smoke and apparently a wildfire had become out of control. The skies once we got there were eerie! We had a great time hiking into the canyon, and it really did remind us of Big Thunder Mountain in Disney. The last day we explored the Great Salt Lake and Park City to see the Olympic Park. It was a gorgeous trip!
We headed up to WV twice, both times for two of our clients who are sisters, we love getting to photograph family weddings. We had an engagement session in Fayetteville, WV at the New River Gorge. We had never been there and it was a gorgeous place and a fun 3 mile hike, which our bride did in heels! Then we had her sister’s wedding in Hinton, WV at a camp in the mountains. Everyone stayed in cabins and it was one of the most fun wedding weekends we have had, it was like summer camp again!
We also visited 6 different cities in SC this year for sessions & weddings. Folly Beach, Charleston, Fort Mill, Clemson, Inman, and Awendaw. We love the beauty of our neighboring state!
We also had an awesome trip to Europe after stumbling upon an amazing deal on flights, exploring Paris, France; Disneyland Paris, Chessy, France; Brugge, Belgium; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Frankfurt and Bad Soden, Germany and seeing Heather’s god sister; and Strasbourg, France which was truly a trip of a lifetime.
FRANCE! Our first and last stop was Paris, which really is magical. We adored spending almost every night at the Eiffel Tower, enjoying the musicians and watching it sparkle. We spent the day at Versailles, which really is a fairytale place, the gardens, the palace, and Marie Antoinette’s village, are just all perfect! The Louvre was massive and amazing. It took us hours and I don’t think we even saw all of it! We also went the Musee d’Orsay, which was also amazing, especially the Van Gogh exibit, to see one of the Starry Night paintings. Notre Dame was magic and Heather really enjoyed the bookstore across the river. We also really enjoy the beautiful town of Strasbourg, also in France, which really was straight out of Beauty and the Beast.
After Paris, of course we had to head to spend the day at Disneyland Paris. It was so neat to see a Disney park where everything was in another language. It had a beautiful castle that even had a dragon underneath. We had a great time!
BELIGUM! We went to Brugge, Beligum next, which was an incredible medieval town with castles and windmills. We have incredible Belgian beer, chocolate, and waffles, all which were amazing! We also had Belgian fries, which were AWESOME, apparently the french stole their idea for French Fries.
THE NETHERLANDS! Next stop was Amsterdam! We visited the Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank house, and enjoyed the beauty of this incredible town. The canals and buildings were so unique.
GERMANY! Our favorite place the whole trip. We loved getting to visit with Heather’s godsister Katja and her boyfriend Detlef. They toured us around the incredible town of Frankfurt and Bad Soden, plus showed us lots of amazing castles that are close by. Heather got so Birkenstocks from the official store and we all enjoyed lots of German beers, which are our favorite.
Our last trip of the year was to our 2nd to last state we have to visit, Oregon! We enjoyed exploring Portland and eating way too many Voodoo Doughnuts. Our favorite part was the gorgeous Oregon coast and Mount Hood. We visited The Timberline Lodge, aka The Shining hotel. It was an awesome trip, it never even rained, which was crazy for the PNW in the winter!
We also enjoyed exploring NC some more and see some places we have never seen. We got a state park passport and started working our way through seeing more parks! We explored Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway hiking. We also explored the Charlotte art museums and loved every bit of them. We can’t wait to see even more of the state and cities we love so much.
Speaking of home, we tried to help make a difference in Gastonia. We took on a volunteer role to be a campaign manager for Walker Reid, who ran for Mayor of Gastonia and WON! It was awesome, and Walter loved using his Political Science major and Heather loved all the Marketing aspects. It was really neat to volunteer and do something for the city we love and live in.
We had a fun year supporting our favorite teams: Hornets, Panthers, and Knights even though none of them were very good this year!
We enjoyed celebrating all the holidays, going to Scarowinds and the new Winterfest. Visiting Daniel Stowe for the Chinese Lanterns and Christmas. Dressing up as the 9th, 11th, and 13th Doctors for Halloween and having Pennywise visiting. We also helped throw an awesome New Years Eve party in downtown Gastonia, where the Mayor’s band played.
We had lots of fun with friends visiting from DC and Kansas.
We had a great time with our family and friends here in Gastonia too.
We had a fun snow day in January. Jagger turned 7, and lost 3 teeth from playing too hard. Heather got her 4th tattoo, a quote from her high school Spanish teacher who encouraged her to pursue photography that says “Don’t wait for the music to play to dance. Dance! The music will play.” She also got most of her hair cut off too. We had fun going to the Paramore and Jay-Z concerts. We re-did the patio and enjoyed hanging out there a lot during the summer. We also had fun going to some of our favorite breweries around Gastonia and Charlotte!
We had an awesome and fun 2017 and can’t wait to see what all 2018 holds. To keep up with all of our adventures this year follow us on Instagram: @heatherburks and @walterburks
